So you’re ready to book a brand photoshoot for your business. Maybe you’re already locked in with the perfect brand photographer, but you’re wondering, “now what!?”
Executing a brand shoot for your business (the right way!) takes time and a bit of strategic planning. The truth is, it is a big undertaking! But after nearly a decade in the brand photography niche and hundreds of shoots under my belt, I’ve learned the key ways to make planning and pulling off a brand shoot as seamless as possible (and the mistakes to avoid!).
In this post, I’m sharing the top 5 mistakes to avoid when planning a brand photoshoot. Skip these common pitfalls, and you’ll be well on your way to getting brand photos you love!

5 Things NOT To Do When Planning a Brand Photoshoot
1. Don’t Try To Do It All Yourself
A brand shoot has a lot of moving parts. Trying to handle it all solo? That’s a recipe for stress. Investing in help might cost more upfront, but it will save you time and sanity (and result in better photos, too).
Here’s who you might consider bringing on board to help you pull off your shoot:
- Your own team members
- Friends and family (ask for opinions or have a friend come along to your shoot for moral support and assistance)
- An experienced brand photographer who can guide you through the process
- A hair and makeup artist
- A wardrobe stylist
- A videographer (why not double up on photo and video?)
- Rent a beautiful shoot location
2. Don’t Skip Communicating Your Goals
Here’s something I see a lot: business owners know they need brand photos, but they’re not quite sure what that means for their business. The best place to start? Your business goals! Whether it’s boosting revenue, leveling up your marketing, or building community with your audience, your photographer needs to know the vision behind the photos.
Share your goals for the next quarter, 6 months, and even that big, wild dream for the next 5 years. The clearer you communicate your goals, the more intentional and strategic your photos will be.
3. Don’t Overlook Your Ideal Audience
It’s easy to focus on what you like, but your brand photos should resonate with the people you’re trying to attract. Think about your ideal client or customer. What types of shots do they need to see to feel connected to your brand and make a buying decision? What kind of photos would help them understand who you are and what you offer?
Consider the vibe, stories, and details that would catch their attention and build trust. And if you need help brainstorming your shot list, download my free guides, Brand Photoshoot Shot List: 7 Must-Have Photos for Any Industry and 18 Brand Photoshoot Ideas.
4. Don’t Forget to Incorporate Your Brand Colors
Your brand’s color scheme is the key to creating visually cohesive brand photos. Nothing needs to be matchy-matchy (this isn’t an early 2000s khaki-and-white family beach shoot!). But tying in your color palette with wardrobe, props, or locations will make your photos feel intentional.

5. Don’t Doubt Your Creativity
Think you’re “not creative enough” to plan a shoot? Think again. You don’t have to be a brand shoot expert. You just need to arm yourself with the right planning tools and bring your perspective and vision to the table. A great brand photographer will welcome your ideas and help shape them. After all, you know your business better than anyone and your photographer is just one piece of bringing that vision to life.
